Banner/notification software solution

Does anyone use any kind of banner/notification software, e.g., that would display on a user's monitor? We have between 65 and 75 branches, and communicating is difficult in regards to outages, downtimes, other important notifications, etc. without bombarding users with oft-ignored emails. Just looking for ideas.

    If you are in a Windows shop - what about setting up a dynamic theme on the end-users desktop and using an RSS feed? I've not tried it before but I've thought about playing with the idea in the past.

    Although - not sure how useful it would be in the event of a network outage icon_twisted.gif
