How to move from Sys Admin/Engineer to Architect?

When I search for Architect jobs, I see a lot of knowledge expectations in different OSes, Storage, Virtualisation, Networking,..etc. Pretty much everything!

This is an open question to those who made the transition from traditional system admin/engineer type roles to Design/Architect roles.

What's the depth of knowledge one is expected to have to become an Architect?
How did you make the transition to design/presales/architect role?
Do you get to do any hands-on implementations (other than proof-of-concept)?
Do you do post-sales support?
Do you have to work weekends or after working hours ?
