Why does the switchport light up even though the computer that is plugged into it is off?

MAGIC! No seriously, it is for things like wake on LAN. If you look at the switch side these ports often show as 10 H/D when they are turned off, just enough electricity for a management program to send a WOL packet and turn the computer on.
