pizzafart Member Posts: 97 ■■□□□□□□□□It typically refers to a switch that can perform functions at the network OSI layer or above (transport, session, etc...). For example: if a switch can run a routing protocol or use an access list; it is considered a multilayer switch.
What can distinguish a multi-layer switch from a typical router is that the switch can perform some of the functions at the hardware level rather than software. This makes the switch more of a workhorse when it comes to high volume operations or speedy convergance. Having a switch run at layer 3 also negates the need for spanning tree and introduces load balancing... there you go for brief,
