Hello,
I am a graduate in electronics completed 2011.Now i want to get into IT.I am from India but the problem is nobody will accept 3 years gap .I was wishing to go to programming line but companies in bangalore,India want freshers of 2013/14.Its like this i have worked in technical support in 2 companies for 3 months each. But i had to leave those tech support roles due to personal reasons. In the first company my role was to troubleshoot windows OS,basic networking, learnt a bit of group policy in windows, outlook email client troubleshooting, etc. In the second company ,i was in AT&T semi-tech support which was a hell. There was no downtime and the next call came just within a gap of 2 minutes. So much of pressure was there in second company.in At&t support,my role wasnt like the first one.I was just required to do next next in at&t software and bamm! it will do all the troubleshooting and we also were supposed to dispatch technician when required. Now my wish is to get into linux administration. But in my first company where i did desktop troubleshooting,i learnt a lot but didnt pick up user end calls.because immediately after training i got ill.
So i want to know what's the nature of help desk/technical troubleshooting? What is daily routine in helpdesk technician's life?
Now the more important question is
Can i switch to administration(linux/windows server department) role by working for technical support advisor/helpdesk position in the same company? If i opt for reputed companies like HP,AKAMAI,MPHASIS,ETC.And if yes how many years i have to spend in helpdesk role? One more thing my friend working in a tech support profile said one can move to admin role only if he/she is working for a product specific company like EMC red hat at&t like companies? Does that mean there is no scope in helpdesk?
