At what layer of the OSI reference model does FRAME-RELAY
map to?
A.) Session

E.) Transport
F.) Datalink
Frame Relay operates at which layer? Can it be called only a Layer 3 protocol?

Think of the 2:00 a.m. test—if you were awakened in the
middle of the night because of a network problem and had to figure out the
traffic flows in your network while you were half asleep, could you do it? -
urvi Member Posts: 79 ■■□□□□□□□□Frame Relay is a routing protocol. Why you say its not a Routing protocol? If its not a routing protocol ,then what is it?

EdTheLad Member Posts: 2,111 ■■■■□□□□□□Firstly do you know the difference between a routing protocol and a routed protocol? Routing protocol = rip, ospf, eigrp, isis, bgp. Routed protocol ipv4, ipv6 etc. Frame-relay is layer 2, it encapsulates the binary stream with a frame-relay header, the dlci in the header can then be switched by frame-relay switches. If you think frame-relay is a layer 3 protocol i'd be interested to know what layer 2 protocol you think it run's over?Networking, sometimes i love it, mostly i hate it.Its all about the $$$$

theodoxa Member Posts: 1,340 ■■■■□□□□□□Frame Relay is a Layer 2 WAN Protocol (Layer 2 Protocols include HDLC, PPP, SDLC, ATM, and of course Ethernet). Nowadays, you would probably use IPv4 or IPv6 as your Layer 3 Protocol.
