This depends on job position and company culture. Some networking, dispatch, and web designing are some of the few things that you can find in IT. You may also want to look for a culture that supports this environment.
From my experience this happens in higher level positions where people are self motivated.
These positions tend to be more where management may not micro manage you but you better know your job and what to do, otherwise you may find the need to look for another job.

Some of the large financial firms have work from home opportunities. It's rare for them to hire people directly into the program, but once you're on board if you are in a position that supports it, you can put in for flexible work arrangements. I can say that stuff where you have to answer the phone (Help Desk) is generally not conducive to working from home. I did Identity and Access Management for a large bank and worked from home for 4 years. It was great. I'm at another firm and even though my job is perfect for it, the line of business I support does not allow their employees to. I'm trying to post internally to a department that supports it so I can go back to working from home.

A few jobs back I had a position where I had 2 days a week from home, I loved it. Even now I'm super close to home, but I'd still rather not have to go in, most of what I do can be done from home easily.

Just hit or miss...most likely you will need to apply to a job and go over the WFH situation from there. I can work from home as much as I care to in my position but that is not advertised in the job description.
