Resignation Letter: anyone know a good template?

DeathmageDeathmage Banned Posts: 2,496
Hi Guys,

Does anyone know a good resignation template? - I've never put in my 2 week notice before to a company so I'm not even sure were to begin. I want to part ways professional and not burn any unnecessary bridges in the process. If my current boss was removed or died I'd come back; it's really not the company it my immediate boss that's my reason for leaving, basically if I ever want to grow here at this current job my boss would need to croak! -

I know it sounds mean to say but it's my honest take on the matter and unlike me most people that are here that are tied to the job since they've been in this industry for 30 years, Me being IT I can go anywhere...

anyways I'm venting now and ranting; if anyone knows a good template it would be helpful. I want to go about this the correct way regardless of my motives for leaving...

This. Just let them know you're leaving and you're giving them two weeks notice. When I told my last employer, they wanted to know my plans, my next company, and what position I was going into. I didn't offer that information.

You are NEVER required or obligated to say anything more than I resign. Even the two weeks notice is a curtesy given to the employer, if your not feeling so great about them and they have not treated you well then you can and should opt to politely let them know how you feel with a shorter notice. Depending on the company, your boss and anyone you worked with directly will never get a reference call as HR typically handles those to ensure no liability should something be said that is against the law. If you happen to work at a really company then you may want to make sure you don't burn that bridge if your immediate boss may be giving the reference.

I ALWAYS get that offer while currently employed and have respected my bosses but my last boss told me it in the simplest way. "No one is going to take care of number 1 except number 1. I don't like it but i understand."

well I've had mixed feeling about leaving, so many good friends as co-workers inside and outside of work. It makes it harder but I know I need to do this so my career and knowledge keeps growing.

Is it normal to feel split in the decision when moving on? icon_cry.gif

I mean, 3 years I've been here so I guess moving on at this point is normal or else I'll never move on.

But a number of my co-workers (a bunch of them known and so far they've known for a few weeks and haven't told anyone, I play golf with these people and have parties and such) have told me I should do it personally since I'll never grow here and they don't like it that I'm moving on since I make them laugh and I'm a people person but they understand I'm bored and no longer learning; they all see it.

I guess it's the change that is the hardest; I'm excited about the next job and uncertain at the same time since I don't know what to expect.

Life is short. At the end of the day you are the one who has to be happy. If they cry, laugh, go crazy, that's on them. Coworkers come and go. If they are your friends they will always be there no matter where you go.

Leaving a job you like is not a fun experience but it should not be bad either.

I am a firm believer that I good company will make you a counter offer if it is possible and wish you the best of luck if you decline it. Good bosses know employees need to advance their careers just as they did. If the company responds negatively to your notice take that as a sure sign that you made a good decision.

As for being respectful with your two weeks notice. Remember to live your life the way that feels right for you. Not by what people will say when you are gone. If your not the type to leave people hanging why would you do it for your last couple weeks.

Good Luck. I have enjoyed reading your posts over the last month.

And keep in mind... rarely will an employer give you two weeks notice when your job has ended...LOL (Larger the employer, shorter the warning)

I had a buddy who had been with a company for about 3 years. One afternoon a security guard brought him a box and told him his job had been eliminated. I believe he got about 30 minutes notice before being escorted from the building. Powers that be decided the site he worked at only needed one tech, and he was tech #2.

My first job out of college, a VP who was sleeping with the CEO resigned via a profanity-laced crayon written letter attached to a water fountain in the main foyer.

That will work. Nothing fancy required. If you have a human resources person include them.

I personally would tell your boss in person when you know the two brothers are around. Then you could go directly from your boss to the owners. Not everyone is comfortable with the kind of conversation so if you need to just send them the email and start getting ready for the next step in your career.
