Stanford University if offering two free classes on Crypto!

Just popped up in my inbox today! Since there are hosted by COURSERA, there is no cost to you, all books/materials are at no cost. Both courses run 6 weeks.

Classes of course are all 100% remote, no traveling needed.

It's being taught by Prof Dan Boneh. Have a look at his impressive credentials below:

"Professor Dan Boneh heads the applied cryptography group at the Computer Science department at Stanford University. Professor Boneh's research focuses on applications of cryptography to computer security. His work includes cryptosystems with novel properties, web security, security for mobile devices, digital copyright protection, and cryptanalysis. He is the author of over a hundred publications in the field and a recipient of the Packard Award, the Alfred P. Sloan Award, and the RSA award in mathematics. Last year Dr. Boneh received the Ishii award for industry education innovation. Professor Boneh received his Ph.D from Princeton University and joined Stanford in 1997.

Could be helpful for those studying for CISSP that have some extra time and want to delve into crypto a bit. It might get a bit too deep for the exam but others that currently hold a CISSP might find it interesting as well along with various other security professionals.
Crypto I

Cryptography is an indispensable tool for protecting information in computer systems. This course explains the inner workings of cryptographic primitives and how to correctly use them. Students will learn how to reason about the security of cryptographic constructions and how to apply this knowledge to real-world applications. The course begins with a detailed discussion of how two parties who have a shared secret key can communicate securely when a powerful adversary eavesdrops and tampers with traffic. We will examine many deployed protocols and analyze mistakes in existing systems. The second half of the course discusses public-key techniques that let two or more parties generate a shared secret key. We will cover the relevant number theory and discuss public-key encryption and basic key-exchange. Throughout the course students will be exposed to many exciting open problems in the field.


The course will include written homeworks and programming labs. The course is self-contained, however it will be helpful to have a basic understanding of discrete probability theory.

Crypto II

Cryptography is an indispensable tool for protecting information in computer systems. This course is a continuation of Crypto I and explains the inner workings of public-key systems and cryptographic protocols. Students will learn how to reason about the security of cryptographic constructions and how to apply this knowledge to real-world applications. The course begins with constructions for digital signatures and their applications.

We will then discuss protocols for user authentication and zero-knowledge protocols.

Next we will turn to privacy applications of cryptography supporting anonymous credentials and private database lookup. We will conclude with more advanced topics including multi-party computation and elliptic curve cryptography. Throughout the course students will be exposed to many exciting open problems in the field. The course will include written homeworks and optional programming labs. The material is self-contained, but the course assumes knowledge of the topics covered in Crypto I as well as a basic understanding of discrete probability theory.

    Thanks for sharing. I'm interested.. tho afraid the courses might go too deep for me. Since it's free tho, I'll at least check it out.

    Crypto 1 started yesterday.

    I've signed up for the Crypto 1 class and I'm going to get through the first week's material ASAP. Looks tough but interesting!

    You're welcome everyone! I just joined the class too, albeit 2 days late but I'm in there.

    COURSERA is such a wonderful resource, the opportunity to ask a crypto prof any question you might have, even to clarify something you thought you already knew is of immense value. I learned a lot from previous classes. Since there discussion forums going on, you also can get feedback from your peers as well. If you're studying for the CISSP why not use this as augmentation?
