Any recommendations? Is Squid still a good option ?

I'm in the process of implementing a proxy server...

I've used Squid and it works fine, except for the occasional weird issue with the process dying because it can't access /var/log/squid/access.log.

I wish restarting the service was faster though.

I wouldn't call Squid 'excellent,' it scales like crap. Just getting it to utilize multiple CPUs is a tedious process that requires a ton of specialized configuration.

It's pretty much the only option though unless you want to spend some money.

Squid is a good choose....i have supported Squid in a large production environment. However, the challenges around squid is the reporting. You can download the reporting pack "Calamaris". But its not very robust. When those business managers approach you about detail reports about where the employees are going...they will be sadly disappointed.

But if this is for a small environment where reporting not important, than Squid is solid.
