Freetext indexes on FT columns?

Does your environment implement such indexing or do you leave off the indexes from the text columns? It seems most, if not all of the environments don't allow for free text querying on free text columns. What's your thoughts on this, it seems that if the field is only their for description such as a data dictionary it would be an overkill. I suppose if you had a DW set up to look for certain words captured in 1800 writings and this information was captured in a database you could ntile or rank off of those queries and figure out the most used word, etc if that is your thing. Thoughts?
