Sorry little confused here,

If I did the security + for my MCSA elective, would it not count towards the elective on a MCSE as well?

In turn if i did the right 7 exams for MCSE could I obtain the MCSA as well? without taking extras?

For either, Sec+ could be used as an elective. If you wanted both certs, You would need to take exams : 210 or 270, that gives you MCP. 215 is next for the server side for both. Now it gets different a bit. For MCSA you would need 218, 214, and the Security+. For MCSE, you would need 216, 217, 220, and also 214 and Security+. So if you took and passed 210/270, 214, 215, 216, 217, 218, 220 and Sec+, you would hold both MCSA/MCSE+Security. In lieu of Sec+ you could also take exam 227. So I guess the answer is 8 exams, because of the need for 218 on the MCSA track.
