Caribbean IT jobs

Just wondering if there's anyone on TE who has or currently works in the Caribbean. What's it like? I've been tossing around the idea of throwing my resume out for bits and giggles. I don't have anything holding me down here in the states. Just got my passport renewed over the summer.

I used to live in the Caribbean (Jamaica) moved up here last October so i could get a Job in IT. Not saying all of the Caribbean is like this but the IT field isn't that strong out there, nor does it pay much and you wont necessarily get to touch the greatest and latest in technology but then again i am only speaking for Jamaica. I am not sure what is like in the rest of the Caribbean.

Now i am not saying the jobs aren't there but its not that easy to find one, especially if you don't know someone.

Interesting...I've looked at a few Caribbean job boards and they do look pretty spotty. However, I'd be willing to sacrifice a few things. What was the cost of living like in Jamaica if you don't mind me asking?

I have looked into it a little bit, and I think it is probably easier to find a remote job and move to the Caribbean, rather than find an IT job on one of the islands. There aren't a lot of huge companies in the Carribean, so generally there is less demand for IT. Additionally, many of the islands have very strict work visa requirements. For instance, I have heard the Dutch Antilles can be tough to get a job in unless you are from the Netherlands. If I could find my wife a job in Bonaire, I'd get something remote and move. Unfortunately, outside of hospitality/food service, there are not many opportunities.

Remote job in the US and move to islands is the best way to do things. Lots of service desk jobs and engineering jobs can be done remote for the right company.

Where I live in the eastern Caribbean, they love foreigners. Once they see work experience in countries like the US the will pounce on you. The bigger companies you would find or usually either in the financial sector or telecommunications. They are usually the ones to snap up the bulk of the IT talent, cost of living here in Barbados is fairly high that being said working for a reputable company will get you more than enough to survive.
You won't see many jobs advertised online, very few companies will do that. They normally use local papers and networking to advertise.
