Straight or crossover cable?

I'm trying to connect switch to a router and used both straight and crossover cable but switch light for the port doesnt turn on.

Do both cables work to connect the devices? and Am I just missing the configurations? Once I configure the port the light should turn on?

When connecting a switch to a router you will use a straight through cable.

Out of the box a switch does what it does and it switches but a router WON'T. By default all it's interface is administratively down, so in order for you to see the light on the port active you'll need to issue a no shutdown command on the router on the interface in which you are connecting the wire.

I agree most likely the router port is shutdown. If the switch has an old configuration on it you might need to no shut the switchport too.

To connect a Switch to a Router you would use a straight-through cable. However, newer interfaces auto-detect the cable plugged in and if it's incorrect it will still work.

Yupp interface was down. Turned up and connected a straight through cable. Worked perfectly.
