Is this worth the price

Before anyone starts the apple vs windows fight, I'm solely asking from a mac point of view as in only macs exist. Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more - Newegg.com, is there a windows alternative to this that's cheaper but is very thin and more portable?

Sorry, I was on my phone in a meeting when I typed that

    Refurbished: Apple MacBook Pro MD314LL/A-R MacBook Intel Core i7 2.80GHz 4GB Memory 750GB HDD Intel HD Graphics 3000 13.3" Mac OS X v10.7 Lion - Newegg.com

    There we go.

So what I want to know is from a perspective of Apple only, is that a good deal, decent computer? I'm thinking about getting a MAC for the house just to have it, become familiar and to me, their products are built amazingly well.

Either this or the Macbook air is what I'm going for and I want to purchase it at newegg, unless it's just better to get a brand spankin new one from apple directly.

The second part of the question is:

Is there a Windows alternative to it, something more along the lines of a macbook air in portability?

I want portability, and macbook pros are the largest I will in terms of the size when it's closed.

I can't really comment on that computer on how good the price is. But after having a Macbook Pro for about 6 years, I will say they are built great. But the power adapter connector to the computer is horrible and have spent over $200 just on cords from them breaking though.

I just recently bought a computer (which is arriving tomorrow! YAY) and I plan on staying away from Macs from now on. Largely because the reason above, and I am not fan of their Operating System. I actually loaded the MacBook Pro up with Windows 8 when it came out :P

Here is the one I am getting tomorrow if you are curious... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T7XRGGC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 , best specs for the price imo. Also I like how this doesn't look crazy like a lot of gaming computers.

But like you said, the MacBooks are built very well and the computer it self will hold up good.

Is it true that when running windows on a Mac it runs sluggish compared to running windows on hardware that isn't mac ?

Yea, I did find it to be kind of slow. I'm not sure if that is always the case. But in my experience it definitely could be a little sluggish some of the time.

For that price I'd personally rather save up and get a new Macbook. They sometimes have sales where they are ~$200 off new. Unfortunately, those sales are usually towards the end of summer/beginning of fall because of the start of the new Academic year.
You could also look into buying a new Macbook NOT directly from Apple for sales.

For a Windows/Linux equivalent, check out Dell's offerings - specifically the XPS 13. The screen on the 2015 XPS looks amazing.

I have both an XPS 13 2014 (currently running CentOS 7, but ran 8.1 beautifully prior) and a Macbook Air 2011. I also bought a new Macbook Air for a family member going to college back in June/July 2014.

Windows doesn't run as well on Apple hardware as on other computers. But for anything besides gaming, Windows VMs on Macs run decently, as compared to bare metal.
