Going forward I'm concentrating all my efforts on finding new employment using this method then old school Job boards. My Indeed alerts will just be background.

It nice to have friends , but I need the ones that can help me progress icon_smile.gif

What is the best way to form Professional Networks so I can progress in This Information Technology field

I tried going to Meetup groups , but that increased my pull of friends.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Networking is a 2 way street. What can you offer these so called friends you are looking for? Why should they help your career. What can you do for theirs?

This is the number 1 thing I think about when trying to network. Its not about who you know, its about who knows you and respects you well enough to give you an in.

The best way to network is what you can offer the people you want to connect with. Ask yourself how you can help these new friends or long term buddies out. If they are struggling with something or need pearls of wisdom, assist them in confronting it. Some of the best networking I have ever done started with just giving advice to a friend or a complete strange. In return I have received wonderful job references and very detail information on how to get in with a company and resumes and letters handed directly to future bosses.

If you want to meet more people, Meetup is a great place to do it and/or Craigslist. When you go to the next meetup group, offer to help them. If they ask about yourself, don't be shy and tell them what you are looking for. Always trade contact information.

This world isn't about who you know, but how you get to know them.
