So i recently got an offer for junior helpdesk position at $20 per hour. I am yet to accept the offer but I looked that they also have senior Helpdesk position listed on their site.
My question is Should I call them up and discuss about senior position? I know I do have qualifications for that position as well.

Mike-Mike Member Posts: 1,860depending on your situation, I would tread lightly. if you can afford to lose the original offer, then pursue the senior one. however if the company is offering you the Junior position, then they may not take kindly to you requesting a higher level position.

kiki162 Member Posts: 635 ■■■■■□□□□□Take it! You need to prove yourself and get some experience along the way. If you are coming in with experience that matches that Sr. role, then you could ask. But don't screw your chances with this offer, and take it.

kurosaki00 Member Posts: 973Wouldnt they offer you the Jr position because they think you're better suited for that one vs the Senior?meh

eansdad Member Posts: 775 ■■■■□□□□□□All depends on where your at job wise. If you have a job, exp and fulfill the requirements listed for Senior then sure. If not then I wouldn't. Pushing to hard on a prospected employer about higher titles could indicate that you're looking to move on soon if you don't move up. They could rescind your offer.

Skynet9 Member Posts: 83 ■■□□□□□□□□Thanks guys...That position is not available anymore and they have taken off the site. I guess I am going to accept this offer.
I was going to call them up and maybe see if salary is negotiable..maybe to $22-23. But I don't want them to see me as demanding type of person.
What do you guys think? ( I have close to 3 years of helpdesk experience, (working as an intern) Plus CCNA and close to getting 4 years degree. (Just 2 classes left) -
srabiee Member Posts: 1,231 ■■■■■■■■□□Are you currently gainfully employed as an IT professional? If so, are you making decent money? That should give you some leverage to negotiate. If you are unemployed or not currently working in IT, you may not want to risk it. Depends on your current situation I would say.WGU Progress: Master of Science - Information Technology Management (Start Date: February 1, 2015)

No. This would be technically my first job. However, I have worked as an Intern for upto 3 years. Just thinking hard what should i do. I need to accept/decline the offer by today. They give you 24 hours time limit.
Exact pay is $19.66 before taxes and everything. -

That's kind of my thoughts, however I can see candidates for the junior position not being necessarily offered the senior position for the reason that they could get senior-level work at a cheaper cost. But I'm also assuming he directly applied to the junior position also. -

That's true. I applied for junior position listed on one of these jobs sites directly and senior was posted on their official site..up until now at least. -

You have little leverage because of a lack of gainful IT employment. Take the job, and keep looking if need be. I definitely wouldn't recommend passing up the opportunity. If the pay is too low, you can use that job as leverage to obtain a better job in the future.WGU Progress: Master of Science - Information Technology Management (Start Date: February 1, 2015)

markulous Member Posts: 2,394 ■■■■■■■■□□Yeah, first job, I'd probably just take that position and be good with it. Not sure which part of New York you're in to determine how fair that pay is, but experience is experience. If it's low, then revisit in 6 months and see if you can find a job that pays more after working there.

LeBroke Member Posts: 490 ■■■■□□□□□□Take the job. Even though you have internships, the single most valuable thing you can put on your resume at this point is experience.
Once you've got that, you have a lot more leeway to look for better jobs.
As others have said, you already applied to the junior job, AND you've been offered it. Asking for the senior position would leave a sour taste in the mouth of many interviewers. Plus, all the office drama of "job already promised to X person, but have to post it up anyway." -
kurosaki00 Member Posts: 973Something positive, you know there is a Sr version of that position. That means they saw in you the potential of making an admin out of you. In a couple of years or XYZ time, you can negotiate a raise maybe, move to Sr Admin. That is good stuff.
I would take a few bucks less in a position with a lot of future and promise vs a few more bucks in a dead end.
Then again, that's my personal opinion.meh -

Tried asking hr salary range, but she said i could bring that up during the interview. In the meantime, the offer i got, they want response within 24 hours.
So no idea which way to go. Any advice? -

What a BS answer by that HR employee...
Why are you holding back on this current offer? Is it not something you like? It sounds like you should just be taking it already -
modernknight87 Registered Users Posts: 7 ■■■□□□□□□□$19.66 is an awesome pay for a first job, in my opinion. I am doing Tier 1 help desk, as well as Assets manager, and a Tech Lab supervisor for just $11.00/hour in my area. I have an AAS-IT, along with certificate in Computer Forensics and Computer/Network Support. Going for A+, Net+ and Security+. I was hoping my degree now along with 9 (almost 10) years dedicated military experience would land me something decent. Like the job, but pay is just not great. Hearing people getting in the $20's certainly breaks my heart, lol.Currently working on: WGU BS - IT; CIW Advanced HTML5/CSS3 Specialist.

NetworkNewb Member Posts: 3,298 ■■■■■■■■■□Could just accept the current offer and still go on the interview and see how it goes...
I've seen people accept a position only to retract it. Probably won't get hired by that company ever again but if you like the other job you won't care if you don't -

Just got off the phone with HR, the salary is 50k plus benefits (DOE). Schedule Interview for wednesday now. I am seriously considering what you said now. I can either accept it or accept on wednesday after the interview? maybe? Or just email the lady asking for more time!!!
If i can get this position, it would be great as i will be working with lot of popular tools and that is if. -
cruwl Member Posts: 341 ■■□□□□□□□□Call the first Job and tell them you will take it.
Is the interview next week with the same company or a different company?
Go to the interview, if they make a better offer take that one, call the first one and tell them you will no longer be able to accept the position. -

Its a different company. Just to be clear here, The offer is contingent on my background check, references, etc...The offer was emailed to me so i have to sign the documents and email them back. I would surely go for interview as it sounds great opportunity.
I am thinking of emailing the lady and ask for more time until wednesday. She might say no, but no harm in trying i guess. -
Mow Member Posts: 445 ■■■■□□□□□□Asking for more time may encourage them to retract the offer. I would accept and then interview at the other place around your new schedule.
-
NetworkNewb Member Posts: 3,298 ■■■■■■■■■□I would just accept the current offer and go on the interview, don't even ask for more time. It might take a few weeks for the new opportunity to even send you out an offer if they even decide to. Don't think you will know just off one interview.
-
W Stewart Member Posts: 794 ■■■■□□□□□□Asking for more time just tells the company that you don't really want the job and you're holding out for something better. If there were any other candidates in the running for that position then the company will most likely make them the offer because they don't want to hire somebody who's unsatisfied with the job before it even starts.
The 50k offer is clearly the better opportunity but there's no guarantee that they'll actually make you an offer so don't throw away the one offer that you do have right now when there's really no need to. -
Tremie24 Member Posts: 85 ■■□□□□□□□□No offense but I don't know what made you think that you would be qualified for a Sr position. Those usually require a lot more experience then you have, if this is going to be your first IT job.
But back to your other dilemma, I would accept the first job offer. It takes time to higher someone so you could start tomorrow or as much as a few weeks from now. I was in the same boat as you. I had an offer on the table, but was actually waiting to hear back from a different job (was the job I wanted). They told me I would know by this date, never heard back from them, and by that time the other job pulled their offer off the table so I was stuck with nothing. I got lucky though and picked up a contract for about month after that, and while at that job I interviewed for the current position I have now. But if I had to do it all over again I would have just accepted the first offer and after 6 months or so I would have looked for a different job if I didn't like it. Lesson learned.
There's no guarantee that you'll get the other job after the interview, and if you don't at least you'll have something to fall back on. Because if you'll still trying to land your first IT job, you need get in where you can and start gaining experience. At almost 20 buck an hour is really good for a first IT gig.
