What will help to get into a Security position?

Hello everyone. Let me first give a short bio about myself. Am currently a Helpdesk Tech now for about 8 months but take on multiple tasks that a Helpdesk usually wouldn't since it's a small to mid size company. I've also volunteered in the past at a Kaiser doing desktop support related tasks and done an internship learning analyst and network based stuff. Mind you, not many hours were invested in volunteering and in my internship because I was going to school at the time. I currently only hold a BS in CIS and the experience I just talked about. I don't have any certs at the moment but plan to work on my getting my CCNA soon. Any other certs anybody thinks may help out?
Finally, to the question. I'd like to get into security. I know it's a general question but just like to know if anyone has been in my same shoes and what they did to get into their security job. People currently in security with different circumstances than myself are also welcomed.
Security areas that am currently interested in: cyber security, security admin, penetration tester. Are these possible to get with as little experience as I have?
I'd also like to know if getting into a systems admin or junior network engineer role with help me out.
Thanks in advance!
Peter

People get in to security all the time without a lot of other experiences, but it's not a good path or a likely one.
Now for your first security lesson. Security is all about research. Locate the search box, use it, and read for a few days before posting again. -

Very unlikely. Most security folks have already mastered or have a high skill level in other IT disciplines. If you were wondering about getting into system admin or network roles, try one and see what you like. Hone your skills and once you have gained some significant experience, security will make a heck of a lot more sense. -

Ha! It's true, it's been security fever here the last week or so.
But, I agree with the others, none of the positions you listed are really something you can jump to right from helpdesk. Go research the jobs you are interested in, do you do anything currently that they also do? -
