I have a computer science bachelors degree, but no IT experience in routers and switches, would preparing for the CCENT be a good starting place or is there an even earlier point I should start at ?

The CCENT followed by the CCNA should be a fine starting point. With a Computer Science degree, you will have a leg up on many when it comes to binary math and subnetting calculations. :)

    I would start there.
Some people will recommend you read a Network+ book as it covers a lot of the basics the Cisco expects you to know. It's good information but many question the value of actually getting the certification if you are going to get your CCNA anyway.

    CCENT, but don't rush it.

The Net+ is a good starting place.... if you know absolutely NOTHING about networking.

But If your Degree brought you a Lot of knowledge... then start with the CCENT instead.

How to determine where you stand:
Watch Professor Messer's network+ lectures (all Free).

If it's ALL review.... then you will know :]

Starting with Net+ would be a great place to start if you aren't aware how an enterprise network works. Then move onto the CCNA.
