Does anyone know how many days gap between retakes is required ?

I'm booked in for this Friday for 70-342 and was thinking I'd retake it the following week if necessary.

This will probably be my final MS exam for a while so sods law I'll fail it on first attempt !

I don't believe that there is a minimum. The maximum is 30 days. I think that you could literally reschedule for later that afternoon if you took the test in the morning. Not advisable, but possible.
