I honestly don't even like the sound of most companies who won't hire candidates without a degree, I know that company will have a lot of red tape and bureaucracy to get anything meaningful accomplished.

Degrees aren't a sign of knowledge. They are a sign of dedication to accomplishment.

Companies as for it a lot of times because while you may lack the technical knowledge they see it as you stick to something through the end.

Same with the CCIE. I have met many CCIEs who are intelligent and many who couldn't route their way out of a box but that cert to me shows you will stick with something no matter how hard it gets.

Have not read the replies but the older guys always tell me some of the smartest people they know do not have degrees, but it's getting harder and harder to break in and go places without one.

Why let something even be a potential obstacle is my stance. My thought is that it opens up doors sooner and can make up for lack of experience. Upper management positions require it as well. The way we're headed, if you're 20 years old and not getting a degree, you'll be one of the few without one by the time you're 40 (in this field at least).
