beads Member Posts: 1,533 ■■■■■■■■■□You haven't mentioned your level of experience or interest in forensics so for the sake of argument and education:
Forensic tools are just plain expensive to buy and not use. Generally your looking at an upfront cost of $4500 for EnCase or FTK with first year support. After that its about $1000 a year. Your going to need at least a GPU processor based password breaker for another $1100 a year. Various different dongles and connectors, 500 up front. The best mobile analyzer will cost $9000. I can go much more in depth if you'd like.
Business audience (market). Once you're set up, trained and recognized as an expert by the court system I'd look to to sell my services to any number of smaller legal offices - too small for a full time examiner and large businesses that can afford to pay a retainer.

jeremywatts2005 Member Posts: 347 ■■■■□□□□□□Impelse I would be careful even with small companies. If you do an investigation that goes to legal and then to court everything you collected and how you collected will come into question. With open source this can sometimes be an issue. Things like credibility of the product, stories on open source and so on all come into play. I work in digital forensics we are really careful about what we use and that the tools are properly vetted through and extensive process to ensure that the product meets legal and HR requirements. We even have permits to operate from the C level for various products to ensure we have approvals on everything. Cover yourself good and be careful.
