VM Rule of Thumb?

I was just curious what is the rule of thumb for how any VM's could be on one host/server.

Example: I have a server with 8 quad core CPU's (32 cores) and 64 GB of RAM. Would you want a max of 32 VM's with 2 GB of RAM per VM?

How will the apps inside the VMs consume the various resources?

Don't forget resources needed by the hypervisor itself.

It's rare to plan to fully utilise a host - maybe 70% CPU and 90% RAM...

What about failover of VMs from other hosts? (Assuming you'll have more than 1 host)

These are the most basic considerations...
