Anyone Ever Have/Heard of A Panel Phone Interview?

coreyb80coreyb80 Member Posts: 647 ■■■■■□□□□□
Morning everyone and hope everyone is having a productive Tuesday thus far. I have a panel interview tomorrow and thought this was pretty strange, but I'm speaking w/ the HR Manager, IT Manager, and IT Site Manager tomorrow via the phone. I've never done or heard this before. They've sent me over everything I need to know such as dress code, benefits, and I had to sign an agreement for them to check my references. The position is for Technical Specialist at a law firm. I currently work @ one now, but there is n exposure to any technology here it seems and I'm definitely going to ask questions about the new one. Thanks in advance for any input.

So there's a dress code for a phone call?

I have definitely done panel interviews before both in person and over the phone though.

Same here. There is a dress code if you are SKPEing. At least a nice shirt and your hair combed..

Yea, I've done one or two of them also. Just like real time panel. Only difference is that you've got to be a little more patient. Give it a second or two before responding or interjecting anything as there can be a slight delay and sometimes members of the discussion will trip over each other talking.

Yeah - I've done panel interviews on Skype, Google Hangouts and over the phone (confs mostly). I really don't like it because you move from completely different domains on the whim - something technical then something concerning soft skills. I guess it's called consolidation of services/time to increase ROI! icon_cool.gif

I think he was referring to the information on the position, the dress code for the position itself. Cause he said "They've sent me over everything I need to know such as dress code, benefits, and I had to sign an agreement for them to check my references."

Thanks for clearing that up ImTheOne. No dress code for the phone interview, even though we used to joke about that at my last employer if someone came in dressed up, fun times. Thanks for the advice as this should be an interesting call tomorrow afternoon.

I did one for my current job, it was the last wave of phone interviews before the final / in person one. It went well enough, it was 4 technical team members I work with now. The only strange part is they were whispering and writing things out to ask me when I couldn't see any of that. So, there were some awkward pauses from them and mumbling then they'd come back with questions.

Word of advice. When doing a phone screen - moderately dress the part. I mean you can skip the tie but atleast put a coat or jacket on - it will change your perception of yourself during the interview itself.

Doubt me? Trouble unto itself. Go ahead and wear a pair of cut offs and and dirty T-shirt and see how you feel about yourself during the interview. Much the same with wearing that smashing black Goth outfit you only wear at night. Dress like a pro and you will conduct yourself like a pro.

Phone interview complete. The call took about 55 minutes. I spoke with HR for about 15-20 mins first then I spoke w/ the off site and on site IT manager for the remainder of the call. I never get a good read of these calls, but I think I did well.

@beads...you crack me up! The way you phrased it was humorous but you do make a very valid point. Dressing for success, whether you are interviewing in-person or over-the-phone, can make a huge difference. Thank you for reminding us of that. That goes hand-in-hand with what I tell my students, which is your perception of yourself as an IT professional leads to you acting like a professional which often leads to jobs.

@coreyb80...good luck. I hope that they were blown away by your answers and the way you conducted yourself over the phone.

By the time I had told the recruiter that I was done w/ the interview he had already gotten word that they are going to want me to come in and interview. I definitely regret leaving my last position, but the show must go on and a lesson well learned here.

My current position started with a panel-style phone interview, with a total of four different managers on a conference call. The reasoning was that it's a global company and two of them were on the other side of the planet, so it was hard to coordinate the timing for interviews. (Let it also be known, I was surprisingly alert for being up at 6am for that call.) Luckily, things went smoothly, and I got a call back from the recruiter that arranged the call about 20 minutes later telling me they were ready to offer me the position.

No I regret leaving the position before my current position. I made a thread about it, but somehow it disappeared.

OAN, my in person interview is tomorrow morning. Glad to see this is not a slow moving process, well at least it's not until it's time for them to make a decision.

Good luck for your in-person. Wouldn't it be nice if that process went quickly? What a concept!
