Need some advice starting in IT

I am currently studying for the CSX( cybersecurity fundamentals exam) by Isaca. I am currently studying unrelated fields in college. Definitely think the skills I learn in the fields I am studying will help in security. So I am self teaching myself everything. I've picked up a few networking books and the CSX study guide. Does anyone have any tips for getting started in the field? And also how much programming is needed in IT security because I am willing to learning to learn programming as well( I would like to avoid it but if i have to I have to).
I am really determined I just need advice on how to get experience ( what (starting)jobs to look for), what resources are best and how to succeed in this field without a degree in computer science/IT.
