Data center operations/engineer/facilities positions

I noticed there are positions out there that are more on the facilities/engineering side. These people work with the IT data center guys to ensure they have the proper cooling, power, tile floor, etc. I noticed quite a few of these positions seem to be more like overseeing the data center. I wouldn't mind doing this to get the experience, but it certainly is not an IT type of position. I work in a data center, but on the IT side. Do you guys know of people who worked in the IT side and transitioned over to the operations/facilities side to become a data center manager?

I work with a guy who's one of the hardware engineer guys for our company. He used to work in our IT operations department then transitioned to hardware when a spot opened up and is one of 3 guys that manage our two data centers. He works with everything from installs, cabling, AC, UPS, vendors, security, you name it. It's a pretty cool job but I'm not too sure how you get into it besides being able to walk right into it or if you've got some electrical or HVAC work.
    Working on: CCNP Switch
