Certificates clarification?

I have a few questions about certificates i was hoping could get cleared up here.
When a user logs into a VPN connection that they never have logged into before, regarding the certificates on the DC, what is being used here? So i'm very comfortable with encryption, key exchanges and hashes and how they're used with them but just the actual process is what is confusing me here!
When a user logs into the VPN does the CA root certificate get copied into their private certificate folder on their computer or is it the specific certificate that is associated with VPN connections.
Do users on domains need user certificates for any real reason?
When a user logs onto a SSL website page, do they copy the certificate onto their machine or just trust the Root CA of the certificate?
Thanks for the help, even though these may seem basic questions i'm trying to get the whole process understood basically.
