Rasberry PI notification

So, I throwing around the idea of getting a PI to play around with on the little bit of spare time that I have. I've seen plans for using one as a thermometer and humidity device, and I'd like to take that a bit further and have the device send notices via text of temp readings hourly, or when temp exceeds certain thresholds.

Yes I know you can buy devices that already do this, but just wondering if anyone has done it with a PI and what your success was.
