Following up on interviews

I had a phone interview 2 weeks ago about an Info-Sec engineering position and after speaking with the hiring manager who couldn't even spell CISSP and called it ICSSP he made a suggestion that based on our conversation I would be a fit for another position in another team. So I was scheduled for another interview for another role with another manager. That was a week ago, the interview went fine, the manager was saying "excellent" on all my answers so I thought it was going well. In the end they said HR will get in contact with me either for an on-site interview or to give me the bad news, i said that is fine.

Anyway, didn't hear anything from HR so yesterday i send them a follow up email asking if there is any feedback from the hiring manager. Radio silence! No replies at all. This was my first follow up for any role that i have applied, I'm a firm believer that if they want you, they will reach out to you. Just thought to try it out but it didn't seem to have any effect. What is your experience?

I was in this boat recently and from my own experience wait but have other things in the pipeline. The job I have now I waited for a month before I heard anything back from them, they were very busy and did not have time enough to reach out to me all the time. I was always on top of them every other week I was calling and following up... While still going on interviews other places. My logic and experience is, its better to have no answer yet then to have a "we went with someone else" answer. Sometimes companies are really busy and can't get back to you... Keep following up, but don't stop applying until you get a offer.

Silence does not always mean no... sometimes its a prologue yes.

Email them and if you don't hear from anyone, move on.

Give it some time. Some companies take awhile to get their stuff together, and some HR doesn't like to respond right away when stuff is up in the air or they're waiting to hear back from a few people. Do you want to be an infosec engineer or do you want to pursue whatever that other non-infosec position is?

And why weren't you qualified for the infosec spot but were qualified for the other?

Here's the way I approach it. After the interview I get home and immediately send a thank you email to anyone I interviewed with. Then I wait for whatever timeframe they told me they would reach out to me. I reach back out to them either a week later or after the specified time frame, whichever is longer. If I don't hear anything back then I usually move on at that point.

Unfortunately I didn't send a thank you email to them so too late now.
One role was a senior engineering role, the other was more junior engineering role. They thought I'd a better fit for the junior role for now I guess.

You got the job? or have you still not heard from them?

They rarely get back. If they are interested they get back immediately and surely show signs of their interest. If not you should assume "NO". I'd say 9 out of 10 won't get back to you to say no.

I was looking for a new job early last year and did around 100 applications. ~10 out of them led to interviews, ~7 out of 10 became silent, ~2 said no and 1 said yes. Out of ~90 that didn't proceed to interviewing phase I got about ~5 replies that they don't see me on a position in question or that the position was eliminated.

In my new job after the first interview I was told by the manager that I will hear from HR in 2 days or so. I was contacted by HR a week and a half later. If its a huge place they are EXTREMELY busy onboarding people for different departments. I say don't sweat it if they like you they will get in contact with you if they don't then they won't. For the mean time keep applying.

A lot depends on whether you're the second, third, etc choice. They wait until the first choice is in the door or declines, then move to the second.. no reason to burn bridges before the position is filled.
