Cisco IOS - Models specific?

Hi Everyone,
Is Cisco IOS model specific? The files always seem to include the model name "C2600, C3600, etc"
My question - Is it safe for to take an IOS from one of routers and install it into another router?

Yes they are model specific and it is not safe to use on other models.

Yeah, there can be major, major differences between routers including completely different CPU families. Hence they are usually for a particular model or model family.
