Not so much for me. The first time I had one a few years ago I received a lot of spam. Second no hits, plus the jobs I saw posted were jobs I had seen on numerous sites prior.NetworkNewb wrote: »I would post your updated resume on here just get opinions on it again.
Also, not sure why you deleted your LinkedIn account. I recommend always just having that up, never know when some one is going to be looking.
See above for my reason for deleting LinkedIn (again) lol. -
NetworkNewb Member Posts: 3,298 ■■■■■■■■■□It's just another resource where there is an opportunity someone might find you. Just because it hasn't worked in the past doesn't mean it won't in the future... Also, a great way to stay to connected to other professionals. Doing yourself a disservice by not having one imo. Zero downside with possible upside. Just seems very strange that someone looking for a job wouldn't have a page on there to me.

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't understand why its "very strange" to not use LinkedIn? There's plenty of people who don't use LinkedIn. Both experiences for me have been lack luster. I don't use nor have an account with social media, yes that means facebook, twitter, etc. When I saw and still see LinkedIn its just another social media page. I gave it chance because I've heard about it through some of my co-workers most of which had mixed reviews about it anyway.
Tried using it again as this site mentioned most folks obtained their job through it. I thought it changed...I've received nothing but emails inquiring, "if I know this person" or " if this person is in your groups." Also as mentioned before the jobs I searched on there were the same jobs I've seen through multiple sites, Monster, CL, Careerbuilder, Dice, Clearance jobs, Indeed.com, etc. I'm on those sites pretty much daily as it is I don't need to see them again.
Sorry for the typos copying and pasting again words are running together. -
NetworkNewb Member Posts: 3,298 ■■■■■■■■■□Here is recent thread on it...
http://www.techexams.net/forums/jobs-degrees/84565-linkedin-worth.html
Its a resource recruiters use to find people, why someone struggling to get an interview wouldn't use every means possible in the chance a recruiter might find you is beyond me. But go ahead and limit yourself if you like... Just because you don't see the job listed on the job board on LinkedIn, doesn't mean a recruiter won't find you for an unlisted position.
Sounds like your resume is still the issue though. I recommend creating a new thread asking for advice on your updated resume. -

Wow....I was not expecting the snark.
I participated in that poll, you can see my vote, and my opinion remains.
If you mean the unlisted jobs like the call I got yesterday for an insurance sales person at a local bank, I'll pass. No offense.
Its good that LinkedIn worked for you, but as you see from the same poll LinkedIn doesn't work for everyone, it does not mean that one is "limiting themselves"
OT I managed to get a call for position for I job I applied for via Indeed and have an interview tomorrow. Hopefully things go well, from the way it sounds this job would allow me to gain a lot more experience and skill. -

TomkoTech Member Posts: 438What you need to know is that LinkedIn is more than just a "source" for looking for jobs. Being in the tech industry a lot of companies will look to your LinkedIn profile when you apply to get a better grasp of you and your skills/endorsements.
If you do not have a LinkedIn account, they may well circular file your resume on the principle that they have 20 other candidates who do, and have endorsements for soft skills they are looking for.
I've never used LinkedIn to look for a job, but I have had interviewers bring up said endorsements in an interview and ask me to explain the situation that lead to my being endorsed for it. -

@TomkoTech I'm not referring this to you. -

That's fine but again it varies from company to company. Just about every job I've had, applied to or interviewed for, none of them inquired about a LinkedIn account. My whole point is what works for some doesn't mean its the absolute. Its pretty obvious that many there are some "hard" fans for LinkedIn. It would be nice if they could be more civil rather than resort to negativity. -
ITSpectre Member Posts: 1,040 ■■■■□□□□□□Try going on careerbuilder and monster.... apply for jobs at Quantico MCB. the Pentegon, Ft Belvoir, The Navy Yard, etc.... there are places hiring now in Downtown DC, alexandria, arlington, fairfax, McClean, and Dulles VA. I got the job im at now because of careerbuilder.....In the darkest hour, there is always a way out - Eve ME3

ITSpectre Member Posts: 1,040 ■■■■□□□□□□Also have you tried to apply for the City you live in or surrounding cities? The City of Alexandria, Arlington, etc.... Some have positions that remain open until filled. You can check on their websites to see what is available... try the DC Metro, Union Station, even the Dept of State, Dept of Ed, Dept of Justice, Dept of Health.
Depending on where you are... in PG County MD right now they are building a MGM Casino next to the Gaylord resort Hotel. Check there for IT jobs as well.
You have 3 airports as well in the DMV area... Dulles, Regan, and BWI. Check with them as well (not sure if you wanna make that long drive to BWI) Also the NSA is right near BWI.... The FBI has the HQ in DC and a academy at Quantico.... you can find a contractor that will sponsor you for a clearance and get in that way to get a Secret or a TS Clearance. You will have to do some sifting but you can take a low paying job just to get a clearance, then get the clearance and bounce to a different job (how most people do it).
Also have you applied to any schools or offices near you? I know schools just let out for summer break, now is the BEST time to get a job with schools.
Also you can go online and look at navy federal credit union I know they were hiring for people.
Now is a good time for a better opportunity! In the darkest hour, there is always a way out - Eve ME3

Thanks I visit both sites along with others daily. Funny you mention career builder I received an e-mail from them to at "Flying J" as a restaurant manager and another for "JC Penny" as a consultant? What LOL! I swear hahaha! -
ITSpectre Member Posts: 1,040 ■■■■□□□□□□Also look at BAI (my old job) They are really good, the Manager is cool. They are hiring right now for IT Jobs....

Thank you tried to rep but wouldn't let me. -
Chevel Member Posts: 211 ■■■□□□□□□□His comment certainly wasn't "helpful" if being "helpful" means making rude/snide comments that by all means I do not want it. I've done what was asked, asked for a resume I posted it, asked for advice I took it. The only people that are actually trying to help and offer me advice are ITSpectre and ScaredofTest. I'm in deep amazement how insulted some of you are about what I said regarding LinkedIn. Which wasn't even bad.

I didn't think it was that negative. And just thought it was weird you wouldn't want to use every resource available, even if it didn't work in the past. Especially since nothing was working for you at the time so not sure why you kept you using the other resources...
Best of luck of your search though, obviously my advice is falling on deaf ears with this one. (didn't do other thing I recommended either) -

When you added a particular " " to you post its hard not to take is as snark. Its hard to interpret things on the web but seeing that in your response that was the mood I got from your comment. Then adding comments " my advice falling on deaf ears." Just realize that people interpret things differently whether or not you meant no snark it came a across as it.
As I already mentioned about LinkedIn its social media in my opinion. While I can search jobs through there the jobs I found were from sites I already visited. In fact that there are links to the "parent" site the job is posted. Seemed a bit redundant. Comparing to the other job sites while some did have duplicates there were some sites that had jobs not listed on others. Also as mentioned before LinkedIn I was receiving spam as well as asking me if I knew a particular person(s)
Thank you for the best wishes though. I hope to do my best at this interview. I'm nervous and excited at the same time! I feel like I'm going to vomit. -
