Becoming a manager

Well I am in the market for a new role and one of the transitions I will need to make sooner or later is to become a manager. I've been a team lead before and right now I am considered the "senior" guy in the team I'm in.

I would just like to see if anyone can offer some pearls of wisdom from when they became a fully fledged manager in the IT workplace.

Thanks

Give all instructions/directions verbally. That way, if things go wrong there's no paper trail leading back to you. icon_wink.gif

Actually had a manager like that.

    A few thoughts...
    • Always think about the 'big picture', and focus on the core mission of the establishment (profits? saving money? etc)
    • Always be business oriented, and be able to talk and translate between the technical and non-technical (think C-level)
    • Be able to guide others, and operate hands-off (without pulling out your hair)
    • Let people fail (with a moderate safety net), and help them learn through the process
The type of managerial roles/duties will vary depending on the position, but business is the bottom line.
