My goal is to become a network security engineer. Presently I work at a helpdesk. Can you all who have been there advise on which projects I should be asking my manager for to get closer to the network security engineer role

I'd let him know your goals and what you've done so far to accomplish that. If he's not supportive, I'd start looking at a NOC environment or junior network admin role. With IT experience and a CCNP, you shouldn't have any issues getting hired.

I was Tier 1 support last year, and now I'm a Network Security Engineer for a large health care organization. You have the certs so it looks like you have a really solid foundation of how networks operate. Be willing to let your supervisor know and take on any additional responsibilities. I'm sure you'll get there!
