Break / Fix second interview?

sodapopperssodapoppers Registered Users Posts: 4 ■□□□□□□□□□
Hi everyone, I'm new here :)
I recently was asked back for two 2nd interviews for IT jobs I had applied for. One is for a Computer Support Specialist (active directory, hardware/software installs), the other is for a Service Desk Fulfillment Analyst(Voip phones, mostly).

I have never had to do a second interview before. The computer support specialist interview will be a 'break/fix' interview. I'm not sure what to expect or how to prepare for either - I definitely want to be prepared and at least not make an idiot of myself lol If anyone could share some of their experiences with break/fix and second interviews in the IT field, I would really really appreciate it :)

I've never interviewed for a break/fix position. Maybe check out glassdoor and see if the company is on there?

Some things off the top of my head:

-A computer isn't starting troubleshoot the issue.
-Computer starts, but says operating not found...
-Computer starts, beeps, then turns off...
-Computer starts, works for a few minutes, then turns off.
-Know your different parts of the computer, be able to replace them.
-Know how to take computers apart and put the back together.
-How to remove viruses, spyware, adware, etc

Can you provide some more information such as, who was your first interview with, what kind of questions did they ask you already, what certs/experience do you have? My first real IT job was a break/fix position. The first person who interviewed me was a recruiter for the consulting company and wanted to meet with me in person, and was just looking for person that would "fit in". My managers were described to be laid back and usually took the group out of beers after moves at night and I was down with that. I had just got my A+ and put my resume on monster and he had called. I was excited and ready to take the job and got hired. The 2nd interview went well, it was so long ago but I remember telling my future manager my long term goals, pointed out my cert, past experience. I was green (inexperienced) at the time so as long as you are enthusiastic about the job, ask them questions as well, have a polite and personable disposition, you'll do fine.

They will probably ask you troubleshooting questions. Computer is not responding, phone is not responding, no connection to the internet, outlook is not working, missing my emails, missing my mapped drives, map to a network printer, one of the 2 screens is not working and various questions that are related to troubleshooting.

I know someone that had a similar interview recently. They had a computer there and asked him to troubleshoot it. First thing he asked was the computer missing memory? And the interviewer says "why yes it is, here it is", after he installed the memory, he couldn't get on the network, the IP address was set to static, a 127.0.0.1 I believe, he had to change it to DHCP, there were other issues, but that's the way the interview / test went.

Thanks guys, that's all really helpful! :)

The first interview I got a call back for is with the state. It is a Service Fulfillment position, mostly with VOIP / Mobile devices (Tier 1) . The second one is with a University, being a Computer Support Specialist (Tier 2).
I've been brushing up on all my trouble shooting and active directory info, but just the thought of being under the gun to fix something is stressful before I even get there lol The thought of not knowing something that I should know to be getting that interview is pretty daunting. I've been technically in the field for a long time, but the past 14 years has all been part time, and I've gradually had to step away from it due to life circumstances (and have done nothing in the field for 3 months due to moving..so I am full of self doubt and reservations) Now that I have recently moved, am unemployed and I am going back to school for an IT career.
Thank you to everyone for your suggestions so far - Anything I haven't known, I've made a note about and made it a point of researching :) ...fingers crossed some of these things actually come up.

I'm curious, do you have a degree? I applied to my local University for several openings, but never received a response. I'm guessing it's because I do not hold any type of college degree.

@Techgromit, when I applied for my job at the University I work, I did not have a degree. I only had my A+ and work experience.

I have a bsw, and I am currently attending school for an IT degree. It is not a teaching job :)
