Why am I getting interviews?

Funny question right. For the past two weeks I have been applying for 1st line/helpdesk jobs like crazy, maybe 10 in total. I've received two interviews today, one of them an agency. However, on my CV I don't have any IT experience, only customer service, and not a single IT qualification/certificate. Also, all the jobs I applied for had a long list of requirements including several years experience, MCSA and other certificates. So why am I getting these interviews. Could it be that there is staff shortage in my city (London) or just clerical mistakes. I'm also wondering wether I should attend and embarrass myself. Hmmmm. Whatever happens I feel very optimistic for the future when I have a couple of certificates under my belt.

Maybe you have the right words on your resume. Just go to the interviews and see how it goes. What can you lose?

I've always been told that job ads are the employers wish list and they will never find someone who meets everything they want...

Out of college my aunt told me to apply for a job at a large organization that she worked at. She had no connections to the job or anything just saw it posted. They wanted a minimum of 5 years experience in a bunch of areas, so I didn't apply. My class mate (no experience) got the job and is still working there 12 years later...

Could be they want someone cheaper (like someone with no experience) that they can train to do the job. You should definitely attend the interviews and embarrass yourself. Besides time I don't see what you have to lose. Might as well since you already applied.

Customer service is a very good skill for a level 1 help desk person. They might just bring you in and see if you seem bright and teachable. That would go a lot further than someone who might already have their A+ but who comes off rude on the phone and has doesn't deal well with people.

scaredoftest - thanks I will go.

IronManx - the fact that you remember missing an opportunity 12 years ago convinced me that I need to attend these interviews.

    E Double U - thanks.

Danielm7 - thanks, I AM bright and teachable! How did you know? Went from novice to supervisor leading a 15 man delivery team within two years. I hated the job and the industry though. So I've since stepped down to work part-time and focus on an IT career.

Its the fall hiring season for one. New budgets often take effect in September or October for business. November for government.

Really, its not unusual to see a pick up in the fall until the holidays when it falls off.

Number one skill for helpdesk is customer service.
