APIPA. I love this question because it was a very common issue in my desktop support days and for some reason a LOT of "IT" people I cross paths with have no idea what it is.

You can also ask candidates about 127.X.X.X. A lot of IT people (including me) was not aware that loopback is the entire 127.0.0.0/8 subnet.

Blame the TCP/IP developers for that. They thought it would be a good idea to use the entire range for testing. It ended up people used only one ip for testing. So of course not everyone knows about it. By the way, I had forgotten this too but I have been watching some CCENT videos and lately and they mentioned the exact some question.

The reality is that you would never be ready for all possible questions. But there are some things you should know without even preparing for an interview. Like recent breaches or attacks.

We interviewed a guy last week and when I asked him tell me about a recent breach he blanked out but then came up with the Sony breach. That was back in 2014, i said, do you know of any recent ones? No answer. IT people should know this stuff even if they are at the Helpdesk.

I'd say that expecting helpdesk personnel to be aware of recent breaches is a bit much unless they're interviewing for a security-based position. There's a lot that's going on in the IT industry, testing on something not related to current or future duties or claimed experience is a bit arbitrary. I would no more ask a storage engineer about the VMware/Amazon partnership than I would about yesterday's DDoS attack.
