Working in a SOC.....

I am currently an entry level security specialist looking for my next career move. Recently, I have been getting contacted regarding positions working in Tier I or II SOC or SOC analyst. Could somebody shed some light on what it is like working in these types of roles? Do you actually learn valuable skills or do you just monitor a screen and make a phone call if you see something red? I am ultimately interested in network security and cannot find much information on whether these types of roles would be a good for preparing someone for network security. Any information regarding lifestyle, training, career advancement, etc. would be appreciated.

Also if someone could shed some light on working in a NOC that would be useful as well.

There are several threads here about SOCs.

    Short answer: it varies.

Some SOCs you will get great experience while others will be less than ideal. Some members here had bad experiences in SOCs.

It really depends on the company, your team, and your direct boss/supervisor.
