How to Succeed Properly

Hey all,

I'm currently in my 4th of 5th year for my Network Administration Technology degree. Currently finishing Cisco 1 of 4 then doing some Microsoft Networking courses. Then next year, I will just have ONE shot to complete all of Year 2 (Exchange, CCNA Voice, Security, Powershell, etc) plus an 8 week practicum. My question to those of yous with a degree and years of experience:

How can I stay positive and motivated without being overwhelmed by the material?

On the bright side, Cisco is finally making sense (currently have a 79% average in the course).

That is a lot of material my friend but embrace the challenge. Stay focused on the prize and keep the vision of what your life will be lijke a couple years from now. While your friends are playing video games or out drinking every Fri and sat they will be in the same place spinning wheels and getting no where in two years and you will be bringing down an awesome salary in a job you love and can be proud of.

Pacing yourself is key. I can't stress the importance of this. Provide yourself structure by creating a schedule for your study time and play time. After each cert give yoiur self a small rest and go out and the fruits ofn your labor but also stay disciplined and batten down the hatches and get back to studying for cert 2 then 3.

Never forget celebration follows victory it never precedes it.

I'm in a bit of a similar boat (although not a 5 year course). I'm currently in my 2nd year of an undergraduate degree (although been in the industry for a few years now) and have achieved my MCSA: Server 2012, soon to have MCSA: Office 365, with CCNA R&S and Security to come around May/June time.

Granted, it's a lot of work and the pressures of so much materials can be overwhelming. Ensure you have good notes, you read the relevant materials and you lab as much of it as you can; this helps reinforce those key concepts and what buttons are where/what configuration needs to be typed. I've found also aiming for 1/2 certs at a time that have some relation to be helpful (like CCNA R&S and Security, or Server 2012/O365 and PowerShell).

My way of getting through so much study whilst sacrificing my own time/life is knowing that once all this is done that I will have the knowledge and certificates to move forward and be rewards for it with a well paid, enjoyable job (hopefully).

If anyone is interested, here is a list of the courses I am taking. The only courses I need to finish Year 1 are:

    - Network Routing 1 (in progress)
    - Network Routing 2
    - Networks 3
    - Networks 4
Then all of year 2. Notice how alot of courses have pre-requiesites.
