What WAN technologies are used today?

When I search for "current WAN technologies" and similar all I find is ancient articles like this one:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb962087.aspx
The most useful info I could gather this far is that Frame Relay is no longer used (kinda?). So... what WAN tech DO we use these days? The same goes for wikipedia, sure it's good to know about legacy tech too but it's kind of hard to put stuff into context as a student without knowing what is actually used today.

Border gateway protocol is used for WANs - Which isn't discussed much until CCNP -
