Best way to prepare for CISA exam - on a budget

Hi, I'm considering taking the CISA exam this year. I have plenty of experience in information security (technical and management) but not in auditing. Still I want to try to pass the exam without a course through self study. My experience with ISACA manuals is that they are very dry, better suited as references than as study material. Is it still the best way to study or are there alternative books that you can recommend?
