How do you transition into a new role with a lot of loose ends and new technologies?

Just curious what protocol you use when transitioning into a new environment where there is a lot of secret hand shakes and secret sauce. I'm in discovery mode now and it feels a little overwhelming at times. I'm good just curious if you have any go to nuggets you would please share. Thank you
