Thinking about specializing in a particular field of IT

I've been at my current job for about a year now as a systems administrator...aka a generalist. I've been in IT for over 10 years, and I don't feel that I even come close to being an expert any area. Plus, I am only making about 60K and that's not very much for living in San Diego, CA. That's why I am thinking about specializing in either cloud (AWS), databases, Citrix, or Cisco VoIP.

Follow your interest and what do what you like to specialize in ! - Cloud is in hot demand now
    - If you are in it for the $$$$ go on the Office 365/ Azure/ AWS and Identity and access management side !!!
live, learn, grow, fail, rebuild and repeat until your heartbeat stops !

You should be thinking about that now, it'll lead to better jobs and more money. You mentioned four somewhat different areas, none of which are terrible but I'd personally focus on one of the first two, could probably even mix them together a bit.

You should definitely do something :]

AWS is coming for your sysadmin job..... so it's definitely a good to forge a new path.

cloud (AWS), databases, Citrix, or Cisco VoIP.

    Thats a pretty broad range.
Maybe try to speak with people currently in these roles (to learn more about them).

    Thanks everyone.

I was leaning more towards AWS and/or databases. I like VoIP, but sadly I don't have enough room for all of the lab equipment.
