Ethernet problem

Hi All
I wish u r all in good health.i wish u could help me in this question.ihave a cisco router 1601.I have one ethernet interface.I enter ethernet interface mode and issue (no shutdown) command.then i return to privileged mode and issue (show interfaces ethernet 0), I expect to find "Ethernet is down,line protocol is down" but i found "Ethernet is up,line protocol is down" although i didn't connect interface wth any cables. can anyone explain while ethernet is up although it didn't connect to anything ???
Note:i do the same with serial interface,but it give me "Ethernet is down,line protocol is down"

This is normal for ethernet interfaces. According to Cisco the output for the
show interfaces ethernet
command is either "Ethernet0 is up" or "Ethernet0 is administratively down". "Ethernet0 is down" is not a possible output, according to the IOS docs.
I have seen non-Cisco references that say that "Ethernet0 is down" indicates an interface or cable problem, but that's not what Cisco says:
Cisco IOS Interface and Hardware Component Command Reference, Release 12.4, show interfaces ethernet
