Can somebody explain the difference between a Terminal Server vs. Remote Connection?
From what I understand a Terminal Server needs to be installed.
The steps taken to connect to a Terminal Server seems the same as a remote connection in Windows XP.

Remote connection is just a connection to a remote place. So, terminal services uses remote connection.
