CFE - Certified Fraud Examiner

Hello all!

I wanted to get a feel for what everyone thinks about this cert: CFE - Certified Fraud Examiner.

Basically, its a certification that's prized in the banking and financial industries for detecting and preventing fraud.
I know it's not technical and probably deals with a lot of examining of transactions and numbers and may be more
on the "accounting" side of things.... but for some reason I can't get it out of my head that it would be a cool certification to have!

Maybe you all can convince me and others to stop thinking about it :P

Or maybe it's something worth getting? For example if you were a security analyst for a bank or financial institution then I could see these two worlds possibly sharing some common ground.

I couldn't find anything when I searched the forums so there's probably a good reason why

Is this more of a legal investigator, forensic accounting/auditing, or incident detection/response cert? Is any part of it related to IT?

It looks like these are the necessary qualifications to take the CFE exam:

Be an Associate member of the ACFE in good standing,
Agree to abide by the bylaws and Code of Professional Ethics of the ACFE.
Two years of professional work experience in (at least) Accounting/Auditing, Criminology/Sociology, Fraud Investigation, Loss Prevention, Law (related to fraud).
A 4-year Bachelors degree, or two years of college with four years of professional work experience.

There is also a "Be of high moral character" requirement, but there no indication of how you are suppose to prove that (background investigation?).

I'm assuming an IT security guy like me could meet the professional requirements using "Incident Detection for Data Loss Prevention" as my professional work experience.

Friends, I'm exploring this CFE certification and if there's anyone interested, lets do the prep together.

I've only ever seen accountants or financial investigators carry this certification. I guess one might combined it with some form of data analytics/science in order to detect fraud. I think you'll be hard pressed for ROI on this one mainly due to the positions requiring it not being in IT. In banking I've typically seen positions that required CFE only asking for Excel skills.
