Question regarding cisco based devices, I have done password recovery on older routers/firewalls for cisco equipment. Anyone know if changing the config reg on the newer released firmware still works or this feature has to be enabled in the config? Trying to reset a device at work and load a new username/password but has to be the same config
Or we can default it, and just throw a backup on it.

Just boot into ROMMON and set the config register to ignore the startup config. Once the device is booted with the default config you can "copy start run", change the passwords, and write memory. Copying from the startup config to the running config is a merge operation, so you'll want to compare the startup config and the default config to
see if there are any changes you need to make after the "copy start run" such as enabling an interface, turning off/on festures that are off/on in the default config that aren't off/on in your normal config.
From there you can change the password and do a "wr mem".
