Has anyone see such a short window before? The current company I work for has a 6 month policy and then you can promote up to another or at least try and apply.

What are your thoughts? Too risky or if it's part of the culture go for it?

I used to 12 months, but never see 6. Only time I have seen 6 was for a lateral.

Thoughts on going for it after 6 or too much risk?

If something is open and you feel qualified for it I'd say go for it, unless you think there will be some negative consequence. I've seen people go from Intern to apps roles in 12 months intern=>helpdesk=>apps. Some places might see it as ambition and other can see it as something else.

A quasi-governmental company I worked for had a 6 month policy. All of the large global banks I worked for were 12. As for risk, it depends. I took advantage of the 6 month policy to move into a Sr. IT Sec Engineer position, which the upper reporting line was to the same Security Manager anyways, so no issue. But I'd say you should feel out your current manager to see how they'd react to you leaving so soon. And I'd have a good reason of why you're looking to move.

If they have a 6 month policy and get upset with you because you want to move up after 6 months, then why even have the policy???

I don't get why employers have policies like this if it's going to be frowned upon when the time comes...
