529 plans - Worth it?

Has anyone used a 529 plan to pay for their own college expenses or opened one for their kids? Whats your take on this, are they worth it?

Both of my kids have 529 setup. The first $4k/kid is tax deductible. It's not much, but every bit helps. Just make sure the 529 is good for any accredited college.

This. If you have kids and are a middle-class or higher earner, it makes no sense not to have one for them.
