Job Training?

Has anybody gotten any training on specific software like Salesforce outside of their job? What sources did you use? I found certstaff has locations in my area for training classes on salesforce. As I work in a non-profit I will never be exposed to software that the company does not want to invest in just for my purpose, so I have to get experience some other way.
