What about the data center exam?
Yes, that is the book he was recommending, it is an awesome book, I learned a lot from this book after having worked with vSphere for five years and having built a dozen or more environments.
For the exam take a look at the VCP offical study guide by VMware Press, if it's still around, also look at the transcender practice test.
